Hi all! It's been forever since I've had a chance to check out this site, but now that I've finally graduated from nursing school I should be able to do so more often. It's great to see so many new members! I've always been interested in alterna...

Profile Information

About Me:
Currently working as an accountant and tax professional. Also an RN student - hope to finish by the end of June 2008. This semester, I've had clinicals on a floor with lots of chest tubes. It's amazing to be able to truly understand the patient's experience, having been there within the last four years.
How do GCTs affect you?
GCT patient
Location of primary tumor:
Left Fibula
Date of diagnosis of primary tumor:
June 1998
Treatment of primary tumor:
Amputation of upper 1/3 of fibula.
Facility treated at for primary tumor:
Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan
Would you recommend this facility and it's Doctors to another GCT patient?
Definitely!
Recurrence? If so, where?
No
Metastasis? If so, where?
Yes, bilateral lungs
Date of metastasis discovery:
November 2003, surgery March 2004
Treatment of metastasis:
No real treatment, just VATS procedure (wedge resection) for biopsy to confirm GCT. My original surgeon at Beaumont (now the medical director for that hospital) advised me that patients do best when the lung tumors are left alone. At some point, when time and finances allow, I will go and see the thoracic specialist at Beaumont who is tracking all of the GCT patients for my original surgeon.
Facility treated at for metastasis:
St. Mary's Hospital, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Would you recommend this facility and it's Doctors to a fellow GCT patient?
No way!
Tumor free?
No, I have so many that they refuse to count them.
Current GCT Status:
As of 11-2006, two of the larger tumors had shrunk substantially.

Hi, after reading your post it sounds like you and I are very close in our physical condition. I have lung tumors running rampant and currently I am chaning hospitals from M.D. Anderson in Houston to Dana-Farber (DF) in Boston. I go to DF on March 10th. I don't want to be one of those crazy people running around looking for a positive response from my doctor but I would not even know I had this if not for the CT scans. Yet my doctors told me to go home and prepare to die. (12-18 months). Tell me more on how your tumors started shrinking. What did you change about your life style. I would love to discuss this with you in detail.

Thanks, Sandra! Thank you for joining. I'm sorry to hear about the frustrations you've had with your Doctors. I've been very lucky to have an amazingly knowledgeable Doctor who I trust.

I hope to reach as many GCT patients as possible. There are bound to be more than the twenty-five or so of us that I've found so far!

This is great Heather! Thanks for doing it! One of the more difficult aspects of having GCT was dealing with all of the misdiagnosis, lack of available information, etc. I remember what it was like to have three doctors disagreeing with each other through me and yet refusing to communicate with one another. This site will greatly help patients to find an experienced physician for treatment and share information with others in the same position.
