Wow so you had yours for a long time. I think I was pretty lucky, I went to my family doc and she said it was probably nothing. She was on vacation, probably about a month later, and it was really bugging me, and was starting to make a snapping noise, the pain and sound was identical to what I had when I tore a ligament when I was younger but I couldn't remember hurting myself. So I went to the walk-in doctor at my docs practice. He said I probably had chondromacial patellae, basically the knee cartilidge is too rough. He decided to send me for an xray, and I just tried to walk more like he told me. He called me at work and said there was an abnormality on my xray. He sent me for a bone scan and more xrays. I watched the scan on the monitor and knew right away something was wrong, there was a big dark area near my knee. He called me right away and told that they thought it was most likely GCT and he was sending me to an orthopaedic oncologist. He sounded really shocked and even said he don't know why he even sent me to xray. It was like he was telling me I was dying! I wasn't really too worried, and I'm still not. Except the other day my husband and I were watching TV and it was talking about people waking up during surgery, LOL.
heya hun cant seem to read anything on your op or were your GCT was? I was in Stanmore in the Albert ward and philip newman (i think) do u have to go back every three months? Im with Mr Pullock.. hope to hear from you soon xx
Thanks for your advice. I'm not really sure as to what to expect for mobility. You made it sound a lot better than what I'm expecting. I actually do have crutches, I broke my foot about a year and a half ago. I'm terrible on them though, probably because I'm heavy, and my upper body strength is pretty bad too. I'm going to have a lot of help, my husband especially because he only works a few hours a week. He's naturally very caring and he used to work as a patient care attendant. My mom is a nurse and she has a couple of weeks of work. My mother in law is also a nurse, she just retired so she has a lot of free time. A few other people have offered to even cook and clean for me. Shows who your real friends are, hey? How did you find out about your GCT?
I'm just wondering when I'll be getting back to work. I figured in 6 weeks I may be able to go back with modified duties part time. I won't be able to do physio, because my workplace is screwing me over on my health benefits and I won't be able to afford it otherwise. I'm really mad, I was supposed to get them last week, but because I missed quite a few shifts due to the pain in my leg they have put me on probation and it will be another 3 months till I get them. Did you have difficulty doing any specific thing at home ie: bathing, going to the bathroom? Did you need a cane or walker? Thanks so much for listening.
Yes my Dr said since the recurrence rate is higher 2 years after surgery that it is safer to wait until then. I just have to pray I stay tumor free until then. Time is going by fast. The end of May will be 1 year since my diagnosis.
Hi how are you doing? Where in NYC did you live? I think pregnancy hormones have a big part in the groeth of GCT. I was pregnant at the time of my diagnosis but as you saw in my blog we had to make some crucial decisions. We are longing for a secong child but I have to wait until I am tumor free for 2 years, which will be August 2009 and even then I will be so scared of having recurrence.
Hi James, I sent a reply yesterday but I don't think it went through. I said that I wasn't familiar with european mistletoe or its uses unfortunately.
I'm sorry you have had such a hard time of it and hope that you find the treatment in Boston helpful.
